The discount applies to the subscription. Setup fees are already waived on annual plans, so there is nothing further to discount there.

If you pay monthly
The same value, pro-rated across your cycle.
Monthly subscribers are not left out. The discount is worked out against your annual price, then spread evenly over the months left in your twelve-month cycle.

One referral on the Firm plan, worth $188. Fewer months left means a larger reduction on each of them, because the same value is spread over fewer payments. Where the reduction would exceed the monthly fee, that month is free and the balance carries forward.
How it works, start to finish
Your code is generated when you become a customer
It appears in your portal with a link you can share. There is nothing to apply for.
You share it
Send the link, or just tell the firm to enter your code during setup. Either works.
They sign up using it
The code travels with them automatically through the link, for 90 days.
We confirm the referral
A person checks it against their subscription actually starting, then credits it to your account. The count is visible in your portal.
Your renewal is reduced
Annual subscribers see it at their next renewal. Monthly subscribers see it spread across the rest of their cycle.
Questions
How is the discount applied?
It comes off your own subscription. Each firm that signs up using your code takes 20% off your next renewal, and they stack: two referrals is 40% off, 5 is the whole thing.
Nothing is paid to you in cash, there is no invoice to raise and no payout to chase. Your bill is simply smaller.
What if I pay monthly rather than annually?
You earn the same value, pro-rated across the months left in your twelve-month cycle. The discount is calculated against your annual price, then spread over the remaining months.
On the Firm plan at $89 a month, one referral confirmed with six months left reduces those six payments by $31.33 each, so you pay $57.67 a month instead.
When is a referral confirmed?
When the firm you referred signs up using your code and their subscription starts. A click on your link is not a referral, and neither is an enquiry.
The code travels automatically if they arrive through your link, and it can also be entered by hand during setup. We confirm each one before it is applied to your account.
Is there a cap?
There is no cap on how many firms you may refer. The discount itself stops at 100%, because a bill cannot go below zero. Referrals beyond that carry into your following renewal.
Do I need my own subscription?
Yes. The reward is a reduction on your own bill, so there has to be a bill to reduce. If you are not a customer there is nothing for the discount to apply to.

What happens if the firm I referred cancels?
A discount already applied to a renewal you have paid is not reversed. A referral that cancels before your next renewal does not count toward that renewal.
The intent is straightforward: the discount reflects customers who are actually with us.
How are referrals tracked?
With a unique link and a first-party cookie, both running on our own server. No affiliate network is involved. A click on your link is recorded and sets a cookie that lasts 90 days, and a signup in that window carries your code.
Your code, your confirmed referrals and the discount they have earned are all visible in your client portal.
Where do I see my code and my discount?
In your portal, on the dashboard. It shows your code, the link to share, how many referrals have been confirmed, and exactly what your next renewal will be after the discount.
A word on referring your own clients
This is designed for referrals between firms. If you are thinking of recommending ProtPTX to a client who relies on your professional judgment, check your own state's rules on referral arrangements first, and tell them you receive a discount. We would rather you referred nobody than created a problem for yourself.
